Similarly, large numbers of short reads are useful for sequencing ancient DNA, taken from bones or other remains, since such samples often have degraded stretches. In addition to its role in the Neanderthal Genome Project, Illumina has been used to sequence 10,000-year-old human bodies and to track migration and population turnover in Neolithic Denmark.
